Versatility is one of the most beautiful elements an artist can bring to their repertoire. It’s a display of effort, creativity, and keeps the element of surprise in your back pocket to showcase to your fans. While many artists like to try new things in the same genre, one man in particular has shown that he can do any and everything in whatever he puts focus into. He’s a writer, an actor, director, producer, and an overall incredible artist, with remarkable works to his name like Because the Internet, Atlanta, and R O Y A L T Y, to name a few. His latest release “Awaken, My Love!“ is yet another defining release to add to this man’s success streak that he can’t seem to shake.
His real name is Donald Glover, but you may know him as the one and only, Childish Gambino. You may even know him as both, because this man LITERALLY can do everything. Donald’s departure of Hip-Hop on this project may come as a shock to core Gambino fans, as many have been asking for a return to the styles presented on works like Culdesac or the beloved debut album Camp, but the creative genius exemplified on “Awaken, My Love!” is simply too pure to resist. The throwback 70’s Funk, R&B/Soul production makes for a truly refreshing listen. “Redbone“, the album’s second single, and arguably most popular, is reminiscent of Bootsy Collins’ “I’d Rather Be With You” with melodies and musicality that echo that of George Clinton. “Riot” has a Lenny Kravitz-esque feel that fits so perfectly into the vibe of the record. Elements of other greats such as Sly & The Family Stone, Prince, and even Jimi Hendrix are all present on Donald’s beautifully crafted R&B project. The album’s grace in shown in the instrumentation and musical expression. It shines as an example of real music made from a true artist. It is a piece of art that is sure to bring a tear to the eye of any music lover out there. Rejoice, relax, and get down to the sounds laid down by Mr. Gambino.
